Composite gas detection for a fire brigade
A handheld composite detector issued to a fire brigade for entry checks across fire, chemical and confined-space incidents.
The setting
A fire crew arrives at an incident without knowing what is burning. The first minutes are spent deciding whether to enter, and that decision rests on four numbers: explosibility, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide and oxygen.
Why it is difficult
The instrument has to survive being dropped, being wet, and being turned on in a hurry by someone wearing gloves. It also has to alarm loudly enough to be heard through a helmet and a respirator.
What was deployed
Composite four-gas handheld instruments issued per crew, with a docking and calibration routine in the station to keep records between call-outs.
Outcome
Standardised four-gas entry checks across the brigade. Fleet size to be confirmed with the factory.
