Aviation fuel handling

Aviation fuel vapour monitoring at an airport

GM700 laser remote detection series

Laser-based remote detection of fuel vapour across an open apron, where a point sensor covers too little ground.

The setting

Fuel handling at an airport happens in the open, across an apron far larger than any indoor facility. A leak from a hydrant pit or a tanker connection disperses into open air rather than accumulating in a room.

Why it is difficult

Point detection assumes the gas will come to the sensor. Outdoors, vapour drifts with the wind, so a single fixed point covers a small fraction of the area that matters.

What was deployed

Open-path laser detection across the fuel handling area, scanning the volume between the detector and a reflector rather than sampling at one point.

Outcome

Coverage of a linear path instead of a single point. Detection range and response time to be confirmed against the delivered unit.
